Test Method of the Week – EN 14476

Quantitative suspension test for the evaluation of virucidal activity of chemical disinfectants used in the medical area

EN 14476 is a phase 2 step 1 test to specify the requirements for the activity of disinfectant products to be used in the medical area. The test conditions vary depending on the product type, from hygienic handrub, hygienic handwash, instrument disinfection, surface disinfection and textile disinfection. The test product is added to a suspension of virus in a solution of interfering substance and the mixture is maintained at a specified temperature for a specified contact time. The virucidal action is immediately suppressed and the remaining viable virus is quantified. Products can only be tested at a maximum concentration of 80% as mixing with the viral suspension and interfering substances will dilute the product.

  • Required organisms: Dependent on product type, from adenovirus, murine norovirus, poliovirus and vaccinia virus
  • Contact time: Dependent on product type
  • End point: TCID50
  • Efficacy: ≥ 4 Log reduction
