Viral Disinfection for Medical Devices

Virologica are ideally positioned to meet the needs of the UK’s successful Medical Device industry. During the recent SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, controlling viral exposure in clinical settings has been more important than ever. For example, we have worked on viral penetration testing to confirm performance of vital PPE supplies.

In addition the ability to reprocess reusable Medical Devices safely is a highly pertinent question. Bacterial disinfection is a more common test, but providers of viral disinfection studies for medical devices are limited.

We were approached by a Medical Device company with a need to demonstrate their disinfection protocol validated for bacteria gave appropriate control of coronavirus. We used human coronavirus 229E as an accepted surrogate virus for SARS-CoV-2 to successfully demonstrate the protocol continued to protect patients and healthcare workers. This data was critical to support the continued clinical use of the device in settings where exposure to SARS-CoV-2 was likely.
